The operation is considered typical of the county's viticultural development, including the part played by Italian winemakers. It was built for Jose Maria Malaguerra and later expanded by Augustino Guglieri.","narrative":"Basalt rubblestone walls from nearby Coyote Creek form the core of this winery complex at the eastern edge of the Santa Clara Valley, north of Morgan Hill. The original two-story winery, about 22 by 24 feet, was built in 1869 for Jose Maria Malaguerra. A larger rubblestone barn, 31 by 80 feet, was attached in 1904 and its roof now covers most of the older roof. Later additions, including a mid-twentieth-century frame addition and a small shed, were slated for removal. The winery is regarded as one of the oldest surviving winery buildings in Santa Clara County, at a time when many contemporary producers have lost their original buildings. Malaguerra's business failed in 1898 amid depression and overplanting. Augustino Guglieri then expanded it, and John Traverso owned it from 1920 until 1950. It later served as a chicken farm before the state acquired it. A local group planned to restore it as a wine museum.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899, 1900- (specific dates 1869, 1904)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition marked good; unoccupied and county-owned at time of nomination, with restoration as a wine museum planned, to return it to its 1904 appearance and remove modern additions.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:32.32076-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/80000858.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000858/72a00c3e9d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000858/72a00c3e9d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Cristiano Tomás","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Historic_Malaguerra_Winery_in_Madrone,_Morgan_Hill,_California_2753.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Cristiano Tomás</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Historic_Malaguerra_Winery_in_Madrone,_Morgan_Hill,_California_2753.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861734","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaguerra_Winery","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q123270624"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/santa-clara-county/malaguerra-winery-80000858/"}
