Three families, Galindo, Gueraz and Leigh, each added to it and left Mexican-era, Swiss/Louisiana French and British Victorian influences. It has been in continuous residential use for nearly 150 years.","narrative":"This house at 140 South Peter Drive in Campbell, California, grew over nearly 150 years of continuous residential use. Juan Crisostobal Galindo, a Major Domo of Mission Santa Clara, built the first part in the 1830s: a two-room board-and-batten structure with a redwood shingle roof. In the 1840s he added a two-story unit for his eleven children. John D. Gueraz bought the property in 1857 and added white shiplap siding and a porch reflecting his Swiss birth and Louisiana plantation background. The Leigh family, from the Isle of Jersey, raised the house off the ground and made Victorian additions in the 1880s. The roughly one-acre site also holds a restored carriage house with a second-floor dance floor, a primitive hand-hewn outbuilding, a stone-lined well, a windmill and a very large California Laurel tree. The house was listed for illustrating how Mexican, Swiss, French-Louisiana and British influences layered into one California home.","period_of_significance":"1830s-1971 (1800-1899 checked)","architect_builder":"Galindo-Gueraz-Leigh","architectural_style":"Victorian additions on an early board-and-batten Mexican-period core; Louisiana French plantation-style porch","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied private residence; condition listed as excellent and altered, with the house, carriage house and grounds restored.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:32.015106-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/80000857.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000857/556d7bced4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000857/556d7bced4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Galindo-Leigh_House,_140_S._Peter_Dr.,_Campbell,_CA_9-30-2012_12-29-45_PM.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Galindo-Leigh_House,_140_S._Peter_Dr.,_Campbell,_CA_9-30-2012_12-29-45_PM.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861679","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galindo-Leigh_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q55757594"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/santa-clara-county/galindo-leigh-house-80000857/"}
