Sequoia Avenue in Anaheim, Orange County, California, built in 1928 as the ranch home of Phillip Ackley Stanton.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is the first and best example of Spanish Colonial architecture in the area and a major landmark on the western Orange County plain when built. It is also associated with P. A. Stanton, a real estate developer and state legislator who helped develop three west Orange County communities (Huntington Beach, Seal Beach and Stanton).","narrative":"Built in 1928, this large stucco mansion at 2200 W. Sequoia Avenue in Anaheim was the ranch retreat of Phillip Ackley Stanton. The U-shaped house has red tile roofs, hipped and gabled sections, a porte cochere entrance, and an interior courtyard with a colonnade and fountain. Details include arched windows, French doors, a carved wooden balcony and a wrought iron second-story porch. Inside are heavy carved ceiling beams, a large Spanish style fireplace and a winding staircase with its original iron railing. It was once surrounded by three acres of grounds with a lake and outbuildings, which disappeared by the 1950s. Stanton (1868-1945) began in real estate, founded the land company that became Huntington Beach, developed Seal Beach, and helped residents resist annexation, leading to the town of Stanton. He served in the State Assembly and as its speaker. The house is described as the largest 1920s Spanish Colonial home in Anaheim.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Spanish Colonial","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition marked fair; the lower floor had been used as an antique store, and the house earlier served as a furniture store.
