They were designed by Albert A. Bennett, and sit in a landscape planted under Baldwin's direction. Together they survive as a rare nineteenth-century country-resort setting in Southern California.","narrative":"Lucky Baldwin's guesthouse and matching coach barn, built in 1885 beside a natural lake at Rancho Santa Anita, now sit inside the Los Angeles State and County Arboretum in Arcadia. Although the guesthouse is popularly called the Queen Anne Cottage, its design is mainly Stick-Eastlake, with an octagonal tower, lace-like sawn-wood trim, and a delicate veranda. The interior keeps fine stained glass, marble mantels, black walnut doors and tile work. The barn repeats the cottage's detailing and retains its stalls, iron hay chutes and cedar-and-redwood striped walls. Albert A. Bennett, Baldwin's father-in-law and a former California State Architect, designed both buildings. They were listed for their architecture and for the landscape setting, which includes trees Baldwin planted. After subdivision reduced the estate, public acquisition in 1947 saved the remaining 127 acres, and the cottage and barn were later restored. They remain a rare surviving example of a nineteenth-century California country resort.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Albert A.
