It is also a good example of a monumental public building in the Richardson Romanesque Revival style. It has served as the city hall for about 85 years.","narrative":"Alameda City Hall is a three-story civic building at Santa Clara Avenue and Oak Street, completed in 1895-96. Its concrete and steel frame is faced in brick on the upper two floors, over a ground floor finished to look like rusticated sandstone. The main facade has three monumental round-headed arches, a recessed central section and a brick frieze imitating machicolation. A long flight of granite steps leads to the entrance. Floors were laid double with mortar between them as fire protection. A two-story clock tower once rose above the entrance; it was damaged in the 1906 earthquake and removed in 1937. George Percy of Percy & Hamilton designed the building in the Romanesque Revival manner associated with Henry Hobson Richardson, and it loosely echoes his Allegheny County Courthouse. Thomas Day & Son built it. It marks the prosperity that followed the railroad expansion, and the city's early municipal power plant gave it electric lighting. It remains the seat of city government.","period_of_significance":"1895-96","architect_builder":"Percy & Hamilton; Thomas Day & Son (Builder)","architectural_style":"Romanesque Revival (Richardson Romanesque)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied and in excellent condition, still serving as city hall.
