It was originally intended to house horses for the park guards of the Metropolitan Park Commission, and the Metropolitan District Commission still owns it and uses it as a stable. The building is in the Shingle style, with walls of stone and wood shingle, some of it now covered in asbestos shingle, and a stone-walled courtyard. It sits close to the street, about ten feet back. Its importance comes from its place in a group of buildings the same firm designed for the Blue Hills Reservation headquarters. Although some alterations of unknown date have been made, the stable is described as relatively little changed and has stayed in continuous use. It was included in a larger multiple-resource listing covering the Blue Hills and Neponset River Reservations in Norfolk County.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Stickney and Austin","architectural_style":"Shingle style","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still in use as a stable; relatively little altered, though some alterations of unknown date are noted.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.796542-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/85/7923/63792385/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/80000663.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000663/9ba844f4d8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000663/9ba844f4d8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jameslwoodward","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MDC_Stable_MA_02.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jameslwoodward</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MDC_Stable_MA_02.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"03000746","name":"Blue Hills Reservation Parkways-Metropolitan Park System of Greater Boston","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/blue-hills-reservation-parkways-metropolitan-park-system-of-greater-boston-03000746/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792385","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolitan_District_Commission_Stable","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6825078"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/metropolitan-district-commission-stable-80000663/"}
