It began as a center-chimney Cape and was later enlarged.","why_significant":"The house keeps much of its original design, its site and its link to David Lane, a Revolutionary War soldier. Despite additions, it preserves its original scale, floor plan and interior details, making it a good local example of eighteenth-century vernacular architecture. The lot is also part of a parcel once known as the Governor John Winthrop Grant.","narrative":"On a low hill on the east side of North Road in Bedford, this house began around 1781 as a center-chimney Cape Cod type dwelling with a symmetrical south facade. It was built, presumably, by David Lane (1759-1842), who married his second cousin Molly that year. Lane belonged to the Bedford militia that marched to Concord on April 18, 1775, and he was one of the last Revolutionary survivors in town. The house was extended east and given a rear ell in the early to mid-nineteenth century, and later changes altered the entry, added dormers, and in 1972 added a connector and garage. Inside, it keeps raised panelling, cased beams and several fireplaces. The lot is part of land that Job Lane bought from Fitz John Winthrop in 1664, which stayed in the Lane family into the twentieth century. The house was listed for its architecture and its Revolutionary War association.","period_of_significance":"1781 or earlier","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Vernacular; center chimney Cape Cod type house","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; condition listed as excellent and altered, on its original site.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.823649-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/97/7959/63795997/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/80000644.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000644/61067f8f4d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000644/61067f8f4d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:David_Lane_House,_Bedford_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:David_Lane_House,_Bedford_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795997","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Lane_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5236333"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/lane-david-house-80000644/"}
