McGill.","why_significant":"The house is cited for its high architectural quality and as one of the finest examples of its period in Medford. It also reflects the late nineteenth and early twentieth century growth of West Medford as a Boston suburb. It is largely unaltered from its original plans and is Robert Coit's only identified design in Medford.","narrative":"Built in 1902 at the northwest corner of Vernon and Mystic Streets in Medford, this two-and-one-half storey Colonial Revival house faces Hastings Heights Park. Boston architect Robert Coit designed it for John H. McGill, a South Boston grindstone manufacturer. The wood-frame house is covered in painted shingles and has a symmetrical south facade divided by four Ionic pilasters, a Tuscan-columned porch, two-storey bow windows, and dormers with a broken scroll pediment. A Palladian window marks the west gable. Inside, carved limestone fireplace surrounds and wooden panelling reflect the owner's wealth. The house stands in an area laid out for development in 1855 but built up around the turn of the century, when much of West Medford became a middle and upper-middle class Boston suburb. It was listed for its architectural quality and its integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship. It remains virtually unchanged from its original plans and is Coit's only known Medford work.","period_of_significance":"1902","architect_builder":"Robert Coit of Boston","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition, unaltered, on its original site, and in use as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.940869-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/38/7958/63795838/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/80000640.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000640/6196f29853-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000640/6196f29853-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MedfordMA_JohnHMcGillHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MedfordMA_JohnHMcGillHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795838","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_H._McGill_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6236971"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/mcgill-john-h-house-80000640/"}
