It is tied to the Stevens brothers, who built it up over time and ran a sash, door and blind factory and other businesses there. It is marked under the themes of architecture, industry and community development.","narrative":"Stevens Building is a large commercial block at 24-44 Southbridge Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. It is built of brick and granite in the Italianate style and rises four storeys, with a full fifth storey over the central thirteen bays. Continuous trabeated granite store fronts run along Southbridge Street, and brick piers rise to corbelling beneath a deep wooden bracketed cornice. The earliest portions date from 1851 to 1860. Around 1866-1867 the Stevens brothers, Daniel and Charles, bought the block and extended it north to Burnside Court, moving their sash, door and blind factory there in 1867. By 1870 they owned the whole block to Myrtle Street and had built the southernmost seven bays, and by 1878 the sections were joined into roughly the form seen today. A major fire in 1906 led to the addition of a copper cornice and perhaps the fifth storey. The brothers later ran a flour and grain business in the building. The block is listed as an example of mid-nineteenth-century commercial architecture in Worcester.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built for Daniel and Charles Pardon Stevens (Stevens Brothers)","architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Present use is given as commercial/vacant.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.031962-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/89/7929/63792989/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/80000615.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000615/95c14d2ad1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000615/95c14d2ad1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stevens%27_Building,_Worcester_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stevens%27_Building,_Worcester_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792989","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevens%27_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7615448"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/stevens-building-80000615/"}
