Slater Estate.","why_significant":"In 1907 it was Worcester's second high building or skyscraper, after the State Mutual Building of 1895-1896. It is a Classical Revival design with limestone facing, a rusticated granite base and a colonnade at the top. The form calls it substantially intact and one of the city's finest early skyscrapers.","narrative":"Rising ten stories above Main Street in Worcester, this steel-frame office building was completed in 1907 for the H.N. Slater Estate. Norcross Brothers constructed it from designs by Frost, Briggs & Chamberlain. At the time it was the city's second skyscraper, following the State Mutual Building of 1895-1896. The Classical Revival design rests on a two-story base of rusticated granite piers with an ornately carved entry. Dressed Indiana limestone, then a new material in Worcester, faces the upper floors, which have evenly spaced paired windows. The ninth and tenth stories form a loggia of two-story half-columns with Corinthian capitals, topped by a dentilled cornice and copper cresting of anthemia. When new, it held street-level stores, an arcade of shops at the second story and offices above. Store fronts were altered in the 1970s and the lowest windows replaced, yet the building remains substantially intact and is considered one of the city's finest early skyscrapers. It continues in commercial and office use.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Frost, Briggs & Chamberlain (architect); Norcross Brothers (builder)","architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still in commercial and office use; store fronts were altered in the 1970s and the windows of the first two stories have been changed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.571463-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/13/7929/63792913/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/80000609.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000609/a577b1daed-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000609/a577b1daed-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Slater_Building,_Worcester_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Slater_Building,_Worcester_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792913","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slater_Building_(Worcester,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7538899"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/slater-building-80000609/"}
