Mid-twentieth-century redevelopment demolished or altered nearly all the others. It also reflects the city's barbed wire industry, tied to Washburn & Moen.","narrative":"Located at the northeast corner of Union and Market Streets in Worcester, this red brick factory was built in 1882 to designs by Stephen Earle, a prominent local architect. The original three-story portion has a flat roof, a corbelled cornice, a west-facade parapet and plain granite trim. Between 1886 and 1896 Earle also designed a two-story addition on the Union Street side, which brought the double entry under a heavy granite hood. Stephen Salisbury III built it as part of a family tradition begun by his father, whose Court Mills were the city's first factories to rent space and power to small manufacturers. Most Salisbury factories near Lincoln Square were later demolished or altered, leaving this building and one other on Union Street as the best evidence of that influence. It was first occupied by the Worcester Barbed Wire Fence Company, then by Washburn & Moen until 1898, and later by G.L. Brownell's twisting machinery firm. Small commercial firms now rent space there.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Stephen Earle (architect); built by Stephen Salisbury III","architectural_style":"Utilitarian industrial","criteria":[],"status_note":"Currently in commercial use, rented to a variety of small firms.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.159372-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/97/7929/63792997/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/80000588.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000588/7cd0ee5f93-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000588/7cd0ee5f93-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Salisbury_Bldg_2_Worcester_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Salisbury_Bldg_2_Worcester_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792997","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salisbury_Factory_Building_2","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7404766"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/salisbury-factory-building-80000588/"}
