The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The form describes it as an excellent unaltered example of the side-hall Greek Revival house, a type widely popular in Worcester in the 1840s and early 1850s. It is the only house built by Levi Lincoln in his early Elm Street estate development that remains unaltered on its original site. It was also the home of Alexander Marsh and later of his son Henry Alexander Marsh, a banker and mayor of Worcester.","narrative":"Built in 1848 at 57 Elm Street in Worcester, this clapboard house is a well-preserved example of the side-hall Greek Revival type that was popular in the city during the 1840s and early 1850s. It sits on a rock-faced granite foundation and has corner pilasters, a pedimented gable on the facade, a Doric porch, and a main entry with side lights. Governor Levi Lincoln sold the property in October 1848 to Alexander Marsh, a piano dealer and later barometer manufacturer. Of the houses Lincoln built in his first efforts to develop his Elm Street estate, this is the only one still unaltered on its original site. Marsh moved to a new brick house on the rear of the lot around 1875. His son Henry Alexander Marsh then lived here until 1914. Henry Marsh rose from bank clerk to president of the Central Bank and served as city councilor, alderman and mayor of Worcester.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Present use is residential.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.586976-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/1/7930/63793001/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/80000583.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000583/0987fb85ab-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000583/0987fb85ab-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alexander_Marsh_House_Worcester_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alexander_Marsh_House_Worcester_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793001","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Marsh_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4719550"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/marsh-alexander-house-80000583/"}
