It is also one of the few remaining buildings from an area developed mainly by carpenters between the late 1840s and mid-1870s, much of which was fragmented by highway and parking-lot construction.","narrative":"Built in 1849 by the carpenter Marcus Hobbs, this two-storey frame house at 16 William Street in Worcester combines Greek Revival and Italianate features. It has a side-hall plan and a gabled facade with a Doric porch, over-sized first-storey windows, corner pilasters and an arched gable window. Around 1870 the porch was extended around the west side, and paired brackets and cornice dentils were added, probably under later owner John F. Adams. Hobbs lived here until 1861, when he sold to another carpenter, Silas Batchellor. A later owner, Edward Hamilton, was a music teacher and founder of the Mozart Society in Worcester. The house sits in an area developed mostly by carpenters from the late 1840s to the mid-1870s. Highway and parking-lot construction have broken up that area, leaving few comparable buildings. The house is valued as an excellent example of mid-nineteenth century, middle-class housing and is in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Marcus Hobbs (carpenter, builder and original owner); architect unknown","architectural_style":"Greek Revival/Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and undergoing restoration, with the house remaining unaltered from about 1870; used as a residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.651003-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/33/7929/63792933/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/80000582.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000582/8a359cabe0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000582/8a359cabe0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Marcus_Hobbs_House,_Worcester_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Marcus_Hobbs_House,_Worcester_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792933","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcus_Hobbs_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6758226"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/hobbs-marcus-house-80000582/"}
