It has a square main block with a rear ell, a convexly curved mansard roof with original hexagonal slates, and a slightly projecting central pavilion trimmed with quoins, a modillioned cornice and a low pediment. Paired windows sit in single capped frames. In 1915, owner Ira Barton added Colonial Revival features, including a fanlighted entry, a Palladian window, a Tuscan porch, a terrace balustrade and a one-story library wing. The house replaced a Greek Revival house built by Governor Levi Lincoln, which was moved to West Street. The site is linked to Charles Allen (1797-ca.1869), a lawyer, state legislator, judge, U.S. Representative and Republican Party founder. His heirs built the house, and family members lived there until 1913. It later became offices.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Second Empire (with Colonial Revival details added 1915)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used as offices since the mid-20th century; the exterior is reported unaltered since the 1915 additions.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.428827-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/45/7930/63793045/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/80000579.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000579/3dbf031e9f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000579/3dbf031e9f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Charles_Allen_House_Worcester_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Charles_Allen_House_Worcester_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793045","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Allen_House_(Worcester,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5075083"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/allen-charles-house-80000579/"}
