It is also associated with William James Hogg, a Worcester carpet manufacturer and civic figure. The themes marked on the form are architecture and industry.","narrative":"Built in 1897 at the corner of Elm and Ashland Streets in Worcester, this Colonial Revival house was designed by the Worcester firm Fuller & Delano for carpet manufacturer William James Hogg. It replaced an earlier Victorian house from about 1860-1870, and reportedly kept just enough of that structure to count as a renovation, which avoided a local requirement that new houses in the area be brick. A 1898 publication called it one of the most beautiful houses in its neighborhood. The symmetrical north facade has a center entry under a Corinthian porch, flanked by bay windows. The east side has a porte-cochere on Corinthian columns, arched first-floor windows, and a slate hip roof with pedimented dormers. Only the balustrades have been removed. Hogg, born in 1851, came to Worcester in 1879, ran carpet and worsted mills, and later took part in banking, agricultural and business organizations. The house is now a college dormitory.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Fuller & Delano","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used as a dormitory; virtually unaltered from its 1897 design except for removal of a roof balustrade and a porte-cochere balustrade.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.370066-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/17/7930/63793017/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/80000576.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000576/03bea5619f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000576/03bea5619f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Hogg_House_Worcester_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Hogg_House_Worcester_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793017","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Hogg_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8012398"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/hogg-william-house-80000576/"}
