Greek Revival houses from the 1840s and 1850s have become increasingly rare, and this one is among the last unaltered houses of that era on Chandler Hill, together with the nearby Leonard Sturtevant House.","narrative":"Built in 1848-1849 at 15 Elizabeth Street in Worcester, this two-storey frame house is a well-preserved example of Greek Revival design. It has a side-hall floor plan, clapboard walls and corner pilasters that support an entablature and cornice carried across the gable to suggest a pediment. An open Doric porch wraps the west and south sides, behind which the first storey has over-sized six-over-six windows. Apart from a small shed dormer and mid-20th-century shutters, it is largely unchanged. The lot was sold to Joel Flagg in 1848 by David Messinger, a land speculator. Flagg lived there until his death around 1854, and the house was sold in 1859 to George Gale, a paper manufacturer, who occupied it from 1860 until about 1900. Houses of this type were once common when hillsides around Worcester's central business district became its first suburbs in the 1840s and 1850s, but few remain. This house and the nearby Leonard Sturtevant House are among the last unaltered survivors on Chandler Hill.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as substantially unaltered apart from a small shed dormer on the south side and mid-20th-century shutters; used as a residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.747962-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/23/7929/63792923/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/80000561.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000561/0a664e3935-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000561/0a664e3935-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:George_Gale_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:George_Gale_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792923","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Gale_House_(Worcester,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5539591"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/gale-george-house-80000561/"}
