It has an octagonal front section, a rear service ell and a surrounding porch.","why_significant":"The form describes it as one of only two octagonal houses in Worcester, built before 1860 in the \"Octagonal Mode.\" It is also tied to Elias B. Crawford, a cotton and later woolen manufacturer, and later to attorney Charles Johnson, who lived there from the 1880s until 1932.","narrative":"Three Norwood Street in Worcester holds a two-storey frame house of octagonal plan, built between about 1851 and 1860. A service wing extends from its south and west sides, and an open porch with chamfered wooden posts and brackets wraps the first storey. A hipped roof with open eaves and pendant brackets covers the building, and the windows are irregularly placed. Later changes include double front doors and some stained glass. A nineteenth-century stable, possibly original, stands to the southwest. The house is one of only two octagonal houses in Worcester. An 1870 city atlas names Elias B. Crawford, a cotton and later woolen manufacturer, as owner, though the house was probably built for an earlier, unidentified owner. From the 1880s until 1932 it was the home of Charles Johnson, a local attorney. Its rare form and its place in the city's mid-nineteenth-century housing led to its inclusion in Worcester's historic resource survey.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"\"Octagonal Mode\"","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as a residence in the 1977 inventory; original use and present use are both residential.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.820446-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/45/7928/63792845/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/80000552.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000552/6a24d78ed8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000552/6a24d78ed8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elias_Crawford_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elias_Crawford_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792845","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elias_Crawford_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5360475"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/crawford-elias-house-80000552/"}
