Halcott and dated 1914 on the inventory form, with construction carried out in 1911 according to the text.","why_significant":"The form describes the building as one of the finer examples of Classical Revival architecture in Worcester because of the heaviness of its details and its scale. It also served as the headquarters of the city's Masonic chapters, replacing an outgrown temple on Pearl Street.","narrative":"Rising four and one half stories on Ionic Avenue in Worcester, this brick Masonic temple was built as a headquarters for the city's Masonic chapters. Freemasonry reached Worcester in 1793, when Isaiah Thomas founded the Morning Star Lodge, and by 1910 a committee was seeking a replacement for the nearly fifty-year-old Pearl Street temple. Land was bought on Mower's Avenue, later renamed Ionic Avenue, reportedly because of the building's imposing colonnade. Construction followed plans by George Halcott, the city's superintendent of public buildings. The facade is framed by wide brick piers laid to resemble rustication, with eight Ionic columns, a pedimented entry with bronze doors, an entablature, cornice and brick parapet. At completion it held a drill hall, banquet hall, a Grecian Chamber, an Egyptian Chamber and a Gothic chapel. Its scale and heavy detailing make it one of Worcester's finer Classical Revival buildings. It remains in original condition and in Masonic use.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"George C.
