It also reflects the shift of Worcester's middle and upper classes toward the city's west side in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.","narrative":"This house at 31 Lenox Street in Worcester was built around 1899 on land from the McFarland-Chamberlain Farm, which was subdivided around 1896 to create the Richmond Heights neighborhood. It is a clapboard Colonial Revival residence with a rectangular plan, hip roof with dormers, and Ionic pilasters. Less common features include a second-story bowed oriel with a Palladian window, splayed window lintels with keystones, and Ionic porches that keep their original balustrades. The house has not been altered or moved and is in excellent condition. Its first occupant was George Gabriel, a bookkeeper and later manager of the George Blake Company, dealers in iron, steel and other metals. He moved here in 1899 from a house on Melville Street that he had built in 1891. His move followed a wider pattern, as Worcester's well-off residents left districts north, east and south of downtown for the city's west side. The house is regarded as one of the earliest and finest in Richmond Heights.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition and still used as a residence; not altered or moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.625251-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/21/7928/63792821/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/80000523.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000523/c5ec6ec5d1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000523/c5ec6ec5d1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:31_Lenox_Street,_Worcester_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:31_Lenox_Street,_Worcester_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792821","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Gabriel_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5539574"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/gabriel-george-house-80000523/"}
