It holds houses built mainly between 1897 and 1920 around an earlier house dating to about 1851.","why_significant":"The district is described as a group of well-preserved turn-of-the-century and early twentieth-century houses, with excellent individual examples of the Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Shingle, Arts & Crafts and Neo-Tudor styles. It developed as one of the wealthiest neighborhoods on Worcester's West Side. Its winding, tree-lined streets and hillside site preserve the look of an upper-class suburb before World War I.","narrative":"Montvale is a residential neighborhood on the West Side of Worcester, laid out in 1897 as a subdivision of 73 house lots by the real estate developers H. Ballard and M.O. Wheelock. Before then the land held little more than a Greek Revival house built around 1851 for boot and shoe dealer George Dresser, along with a stable and outbuildings. The new lots filled with houses of high quality in the Queen Anne, Shingle, Colonial Revival, Arts & Crafts and Neo-Tudor styles. Notable examples include 254 Salisbury Street, designed by George Clemence, and 11 Monadnock Road, home of the architect Clellan Fisher. The firm Earle & Fisher designed several houses and the 1898 additions to the Dresser house. Later building on the eastern half brought Arts & Crafts and Neo-Tudor designs. The houses remain well preserved, and the curving, tree-lined streets and hillside setting keep the character of an upper-class suburb from before World War I.","period_of_significance":"1851, 1897-1920","architect_builder":"Earle & Fisher (architects); George Clemence (architect); Clellan Fisher (architect)","architectural_style":"Mixed Victorian and early 20th century: Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Shingle Style, Arts & Crafts/Neo-Tudor, Greek Revival, Eclectic","criteria":[],"status_note":"Area described as uniform in excellent condition, in private ownership and in residential use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.876691-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/44/7931/63793144/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/80000521.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000521/58b5427e12-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000521/58b5427e12-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Montvale_Historic_District.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Montvale_Historic_District.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793144","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montvale_(Worcester,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6906636"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/montvale-80000521/"}
