It also records its early use as the Chadwick Tavern or Hotel and its later ties to Josiah Brittan, a mid-nineteenth-century landowner and brickyard operator near Adams Square.","narrative":"Located at 309 Lincoln Street in Worcester, this clapboard house dates to about 1797 and was built for Lydia Chadwick. It began as a residence and inn, known in local histories as the Chadwick Tavern and later the Chadwick Hotel, which opened around 1800. By 1833 it had stopped operating as an inn and was owned by A.D. Foster. In the mid-nineteenth century Josiah Brittan lived there; he owned extensive property around Adams Square and ran a brickyard nearby. Later owners included a blacksmith, George H. Lane, and Josiah Shattuck of the Worcester Truck Company. The house is two and one-half stories with a symmetrical center-entrance facade, a brick foundation, twin interior chimneys, and a long rear ell that keeps some original 6/9 sash. A Greek Revival doorway (about 1845) and Colonial Revival dormers and porch (about 1900) were added. It is described as one of Worcester's few well-preserved Federalist-period houses. It may have been moved slightly north in the 1880s or 1890s to make way for Shaffner Street.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federalist","criteria":[],"status_note":"Residential use only from the mid-19th century to the present.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.773587-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/83/7928/63792883/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/80000518.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000518/46098b4fef-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000518/46098b4fef-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chadwick-Brittain_House_Worcester_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chadwick-Brittain_House_Worcester_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792883","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chadwick-Brittan_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5066515"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/chadwick-brittan-house-80000518/"}
