It was built where no branch libraries had existed in outlying parts of the city before 1914. The site was donated by Greendale manufacturers.","narrative":"Greendale Branch Library, at 470 West Boylston Street in Worcester, is a one-storey brick building on a high basement under a tile roof. Completed in 1913 and designed by Lucius Briggs while with the firm of Frost, Briggs and Chamberlain, it shows elements of Spanish Mission architecture. Its symmetrical facade is dominated by a projecting central pavilion with a carved stone doorway framed by Corinthian pilasters, consoles and a semi-circular pediment. Geometric brickwork and limestone trim decorate the walls. A plaque credits the site to the manufacturers of Greendale, including Norton Company and Osgood Bradley Car Company. The library belongs to Worcester's effort to extend service beyond the main library on Elm Street. Book delivery began in Greendale in 1895, and around 1912 Andrew Carnegie gave the city $75,000 for three branch libraries. Cornerstones for all three were laid on March 17, 1913. The building has not been altered or moved and still serves as a library owned by the city.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Lucius Briggs of Frost, Briggs & Chamberlain","architectural_style":"Elements of Spanish Mission","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still in use as a library; unaltered and not moved according to the form.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.232971-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/67/7929/63792967/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/80000511.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000511/4fc7a67497-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000511/4fc7a67497-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Greendale_Branch_Library_Worcester_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Greendale_Branch_Library_Worcester_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792967","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frances_Perkins_Branch_Library","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5603812"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/greendale-branch-library-80000511/"}
