The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"It is an early example of the popular side-hall Greek Revival house, with Federalist holdovers such as narrow corner boards, window trim and a narrow cornice. Its entry, with an original six-panel door, sidelights and an architrave with corner and center blocks, is fine and rare in Worcester. The house was also later owned by architect James Fuller of Fuller and Delano.","narrative":"Built between about 1833 and 1845 at 24 Brattle Street, north of Worcester's center, this two-and-one-half-storey frame house is an early example of the side-hall Greek Revival type. It rests on a rock-faced granite foundation and has a pedimented gable facade. Narrow corner boards, window trim and a narrow cornice carry over from Federalist design. Its entry is the most notable feature: an original six-panel door set between sidelights, framed by an architrave with corner and center blocks. The pattern derives from Asher Benjamin's builders' guides of the 1830s, and only one other doorway of this type is known in Worcester, on the Ezra Rice House. Charles Newton, a farmer, was the original owner and occupant in the 1850s. Later owners included Calvin Foster, a hardware dealer and bank president, and James Fuller, a partner in the Worcester architecture firm Fuller and Delano. Fuller's son Robert lived there in the early twentieth century.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Transitional Federalist to Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still used as a residence; the form lists it as unaltered and not moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.653641-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/29/7928/63792829/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/80000508.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000508/94160ae99b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000508/94160ae99b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Charles_Newton_House_Worcester_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Charles_Newton_House_Worcester_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792829","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Newton_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5081245"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/newton-charles-house-80000508/"}
