The land was donated by carpet manufacturers Alfred Thomas and Matthew J. Whittall. It is also noted as an excellent, unaltered example of classical/Renaissance-derived design.","narrative":"Opened in 1913 at 705 Southbridge Street, the South Worcester Branch Library is a one-storey yellow brick building set on a high basement. Henry D. Whitfield is named as architect. The symmetrical facade has a projecting center pavilion, reached by two flights of granite stairs with solid limestone railings. Dressed limestone trim draws on classical and Renaissance sources, including Tuscan entry columns, earred window frames with moulded caps, carved stone panels and a stepped parapet. A low granite curb runs along the street frontage. The library was one of three branches funded by a $75,000 gift from Andrew Carnegie in 1912, alongside the Quinsigamond and Greendale branches. By 1908 the city's growth had created neighborhoods far from the main library on Elm Street, prompting calls for branches. Carpet manufacturers Alfred Thomas and Matthew J. Whittall donated the land. The building remains in excellent, original condition and is still used as a library.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Henry D.
