Together with the Junction Shop, it is the most significant remnant of the city's early industrial development. It is also tied to Eli Thayer, firearms manufacture for the Civil War, and later woolen production.","narrative":"Adriatic Mill, originally the Lower Junction Shop, is a long industrial building on Armory Street in Worcester. Built in 1854 by Eli Thayer, an abolitionist, congressman and local real estate developer, the main block is two stories high, 400 feet long and 40 feet wide. It is made of stone chips covered with stucco, with repeating equal bays, 12/12 windows on both floors and a pitched roof with evenly spaced dormers. Brick and rubble additions followed between the 1860s and the mid-twentieth century. The building changed use several times. Thayer may have rented space to manufacturers until 1859, when it passed to B. F. Joslyn, whose firm made pistols and breech-loading carbines for the War Department. It briefly served as soldiers' barracks in 1861-1862. Jordan Marsh & Co. converted it to a woolen mill in 1863, and the Worcester Woolen Company owned it from 1881 until the 1920s. It is now a foundry. It is the second oldest surviving mill in Worcester and retains most of its original design.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Eli Thayer (?)","architectural_style":"Utilitarian industrial","criteria":[],"status_note":"Present use is as a foundry (Standard Foundry Division); the form lists later additions from 1870 through the mid-twentieth century.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.74282-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/95/7929/63792995/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/80000483.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000483/75f81f0255-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000483/75f81f0255-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown authorUnknown author","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AdriaticMills.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown authorUnknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AdriaticMills.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792995","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adriatic_Mills","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715384"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/adriatic-mills-80000483/"}
