It is tied to the early development of Ipswich through Benjamin Grant, who died in the French and Indian War, and the Ross family, who owned it from 1784 into the mid-20th century.","narrative":"Built around 1735 at 47 County Street in Ipswich, this 2 1/2 story end-gable house has a large central chimney, a one-room-deep front section and a rear lean-to. Its five-bay facade is slightly asymmetrical. Asbestos shingle siding was added in the 20th century, yet the house is described as an excellent early eighteenth century example that retains many original features. Inside, one chamber chimney wall combines feather-edge panelling at the sides with raised field panelling over the fireplace, and more early finish may survive behind the walls. Benjamin Grant bought the land in 1735 and built the house. A corporal, he was killed in the French and Indian War in 1756. Joseph Ross, a Revolutionary War soldier, bought the property in 1784, and it stayed in his family until the mid-20th century. The chimney was rebuilt above the roof in 1978, and preservation easements now protect the house.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Benjamin Grant (built his house)","architectural_style":"early Second Period","criteria":[],"status_note":"Present use is residence; the central chimney was rebuilt above the roofline in 1978, and the house is protected by preservation easements.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.609169-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/66/7901/63790166/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/80000449.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000449/dba8b14ecb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000449/dba8b14ecb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Benjamin_Grant_House,_Ipswich_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Benjamin_Grant_House,_Ipswich_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790166","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Grant_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4888720"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/grant-benjamin-house-80000449/"}
