It preserves the essential features of the most popular Federal-period house type and has a relatively rare monitor/cupola. It is also associated with several leading nineteenth-century citizens, notably Joseph W. Capron.","narrative":"Built in 1822 for Attleboro's East (Second) Parish, this timber-frame house at 41 South Main Street is the oldest surviving house in the center of Attleboro. It rises two and a half stories under a hipped roof topped by a small monitor/cupola, with a symmetrical five-bay facade typical of Federal-period design. A one-story rear ell was added probably after 1835, and a Victorian entry hood was likely added in the 1870s. The parish used it as a parsonage only from 1822 to 1835, when it housed the Reverend John Ferguson. Later owners included Joseph W. Capron, a town surveyor, county commissioner, justice of the peace and head of local insurance, gaslight and savings institutions; the cupola served as a practice room for the town band. In the early twentieth century the house held a kindergarten and commercial school classrooms, then a hotel annex, before becoming four apartments in 1945. It is the area's last reminder of the village Attleboro once was.","period_of_significance":"1822","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal (Federalist)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Converted to four apartments in 1945 and still in that use at the time of nomination; the form marks it occupied and altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:55.032354-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/22/7944/63794422/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/80000429.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000429/3ab9185b09-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/80000429/3ab9185b09-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Elizabeth Phillips","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NorthAttleboro_SecondChurchParsonage.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Elizabeth Phillips</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NorthAttleboro_SecondChurchParsonage.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794422","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Parsonage_for_Second_East_Parish_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5453495"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/bristol-county/first-parsonage-for-second-east-parish-church-80000429/"}
