Dating from about 1870, it was built after a fire destroyed earlier wooden buildings on the same site. The building rests on a stone foundation and has a flat composition roof, a four-bay front and a rectangular plan. Its elaborate wood cornice and highly detailed hood moldings over the windows give it real distinction, and it is identical to the Masonic temple block to the north. A shake shingle overhang has been added over the first floor, and the street-level storefront has been somewhat modernized. Local surveyors regarded it as one of Vermilion's most attractive commercial buildings and an excellent example of Italianate commercial architecture from the second half of the 19th century. It adjoins other commercial structures near the center of downtown and remains in commercial use in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good interior and exterior condition and in commercial use; the street-level storefront has been somewhat modernized and a shake shingle overhang was added over the first floor.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.177174-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79003951.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003951/dda66e489a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003951/dda66e489a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"LeeG7144","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Englebry%27s_Dry_Goods.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">LeeG7144</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Englebry%27s_Dry_Goods.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71984944","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137784519"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/erie-county/englebrys-dry-goods-79003951/"}
