Built in 1878-9 by Jacob Schade, it has a T-shaped plan, a gabled roof with asphalt shingles, a stone foundation and a basement. Its most notable features are a porch with elaborately carved wood members and windows framed by ornate moulding. The shutters are not original. The proportions are somewhat Greek, while the detailing is Italianate, and the form classifies the style as vernacular. The Baxtine family lived here for many years. The house was recorded as one of Vermilion's numerous fine older houses and as a well preserved example of late 19th century frame architecture in the city. It stands on a large lot with shade trees, gardens and shrubbery in a residential neighborhood. It remains in use as a house, with interior condition rated good and exterior very good. It was included in the Vermilion-Harbour Town multiple resource area.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Jacob Schade (builder)","architectural_style":"Vernacular (Greek in proportions, Italianate in detailing)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used as a house; interior condition good, exterior very good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.715887-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79003920.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003920/ef4e4c4991-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003920/ef4e4c4991-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Baxtine_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Baxtine_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71984794","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137783705"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/erie-county/baxtine-house-79003920/"}
