It also has important associations with the history of Ashland County. Its raised site in the middle of a city block, its scale and its frequent public use add to its prominence.","narrative":"Ashland County Courthouse occupies a small city block northwest of downtown Ashland, Ohio, set on a slight rise among lawns and shade trees. Built in 1928-29 to designs by Vernon Redding and Associates of Mansfield, it is faced in light gray Indiana limestone and has two main floors over a raised basement. Broad pilasters group the windows, a massive simplified entablature crowns the walls, and a shallow two-story portico opens onto a terrace with a stone balustrade. Carved eagles accent the front parapet. Inside, the vestibule has a coffered ceiling, marble walls and two open stairways, while the second-floor courtroom has mahogany paneling and four chandeliers. The design is a stripped Neoclassical style with no dome, clock or statue of Justice. It replaced an 1852 brick courthouse condemned by state inspectors, and a $325,000 bond issue paid for it. The building is considered a rare Ohio example of its style and a local landmark, and it remains largely unaltered.","period_of_significance":"1928-29","architect_builder":"Vernon Redding and Associates, Mansfield","architectural_style":"Stripped Neoclassicism, also described as late Neoclassical or Art Deco","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as surviving in excellent condition with virtually no changes, apart from suspended ceilings added in some offices; marked occupied and in government use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.036876-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79003786.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003786/24eaebc973-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003786/24eaebc973-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"User:OHWiki","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ashland-County-Ohio-Courthouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:OHWiki</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ashland-County-Ohio-Courthouse.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"12001209","name":"Downtown Ashland Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/downtown-ashland-historic-district-12001209/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71986619","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashland_County_Courthouse_(Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4805238"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/ashland-county/ashland-county-courthouse-79003786/"}
