Its interior woodwork, with sunbursts, reeding, frets and false graining, is regionally important. The late nineteenth-century expansion reinterprets the original Federal motifs. The house is also tied to Josiah Crudup, a planter, Baptist minister and legislator, and to his son John B. Crudup.","narrative":"Set on the prow of a gentle hill above U.S. 1 and the adjoining railroad near Kittrell, this large frame house began as a late Federal plantation dwelling, probably built in the 1830s for Josiah Crudup, a planter, Baptist minister and legislator. Its original form was a two-story central block with one-story flanking wings. In the late nineteenth century the wings were raised to two stories and new roofs, bay windows and a porch were added, probably for his son John B. Crudup. The house keeps its grand first-floor plan and exceptional interior woodwork, including carved sunbursts, reeding, frets and false graining. The woodwork resembles work at Tusculum and Elgin in Warren County. Outside, the entrances and windows show elaborate enframements and an arcaded cornice. A brick ice house, a nineteenth-century barn and the old kitchen wing survive on the property. It was listed as a rare, richly finished example of the tripartite plantation house in the northeastern Piedmont.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Late Federal, tripartite plantation house, with late nineteenth-century colonial revival-type expansion","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed as occupied and used as a private residence; condition marked fair.
