Built in 1926 to designs by Norman Sturgis of Albany.","why_significant":"The house illustrates the intense interest in early American history that arose in the first quarter of the 20th century. It was built using the exterior appearance and many salvaged materials of the c. 1806 Hegeman house in Vischer Ferry. It reflects the colonial taste seen in other Loudon Road homes built during suburban expansion.","narrative":"Built in 1926 at 347 Loudon Road in the Town of Colonie, this brick residence was designed by Albany architect Norman Sturgis in the Colonial Revival style. It has five bays and two stories, with flanking one-and-a-half-story wings and an attached garage. Much of its fabric came from the c. 1806 Hegeman house in Vischer Ferry, including structural members, much of the brick, the doorway and first-floor hallway woodwork, and several mantels. The Gorham family who built it copied the general exterior of the older house, but changed its setting: the Hegeman house sat on treeless river flats, while the new home was placed at the edge of a rugged wooded ravine, screened from the road by dense vegetation. The house is significant as an example of early twentieth-century enthusiasm for American history and the colonial past, a taste also seen in other Loudon Road homes built during suburban expansion. It remains a private residence on about 5.6 acres.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Norman Sturgis of Albany (architect)","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in good condition, original site, used as a residence, with no threats known.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.189536-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/79003239.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75311961","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorham_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5586407"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/albany-county/gorham-house-79003239/"}
