It was built in 1856 as Horace Greeley's dairy barn and converted to a residence in 1891-92.","why_significant":"The 1856 barn was one of the first concrete structures in the country and, as far as is known, the first concrete barn. Its three-level hillside design was a labor-saving innovation. Its 1890s conversion into a neo-Gothic home for Greeley's daughter, designed by Ralph Adams Cram, adds architectural and local community interest.","narrative":"Rehoboth in Chappaqua, New York, began as a dairy barn designed and built by newspaper editor Horace Greeley in 1856 on his experimental farm. Its two-foot-thick concrete walls make it one of the first concrete structures in the country and, as far as is known, the first concrete barn. Greeley used the hillside to give the three-level building entrance doors on each floor, for hay, cattle, and waste removal. In 1891-92 the barn was converted into a home for his daughter Gabrielle and her husband, with plans by architect Ralph Adams Cram. The neo-Gothic result has a sharply peaked roof, pointed arch windows, and arched doors. Inside are a tiled reception hall, a curving staircase, and a large living room with massive ceiling beams and a fireplace. That room hosted community gatherings, from political discussions to concerts. A 1954 restoration returned the roof to its simple original line. The building remains a private residence in excellent condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Designed by Horace Greeley (1856 barn); converted 1891-92 by architect Ralph Adams Cram (also given as Charles Adams Cram in the continuation sheet); builder not known","architectural_style":"Neo-Gothic (residential conversion of a concrete barn)","criteria":[],"status_note":"In use as a private residence; condition described as excellent and no threats known.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:38.941773-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/79003214.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003214/74c793ee7b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003214/74c793ee7b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rehoboth,_Chappaqua,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rehoboth,_Chappaqua,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315465","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rehoboth_(Chappaqua,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7309836"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/rehoboth-79003214/"}
