It houses city government offices, a police section, a jail and a second-floor opera house.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is an unusually consistent example of the late French Second Empire style, with a high mansard roof, arched windows and Corinthian columns. It is also unusual for combining city government with a community opera house in one building, with no similar building within a wide area. It has served as the center of city government for over a century.","narrative":"Built in 1878 on a corner lot along Railroad Street in Sandwich, Illinois, this red brick building combined city offices, a jail and a public opera house under one roof. Architect Israel Doan applied the late French Second Empire style throughout, from the high slate mansard roof and ornate metal soffit to the arched windows and horizontal masonry bands. Inside, twelve-foot metal Corinthian columns, walnut stairways and stenciled wainscot carry the style through. The upstairs hall seated about 560 people with a 200-seat gallery. From construction until 1941 it hosted visiting theatrical troupes, home talent shows, dances, movies and meetings, and high school graduations were held there until 1922. The first floor later became a police station and communications center, and a county judge heard cases in the council room until 1976. Alterations include new east entrances, a garage addition and removal of the gallery railing. The building was listed for its design and its long service as the town's civic and social center.","period_of_significance":"1878","architect_builder":"Israel Doan","architectural_style":"Late French Second Empire","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and in use as city hall and police facility; general condition described as good, with some roof leaks, missing chandeliers and removed gallery railing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.436807-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/18/8927/28892718/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/79003159.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003159/362ca27095-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003159/362ca27095-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.5","author":"A.
