It was probably built about 1860 when the Henderson family divided the area into building lots.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is one of the most outstanding Gothic Revival examples in the Pittsburgh area, with an asymmetrical plan and machine-cut decorative details that combine cottage-style features with a grander stone residence. Few houses of this style survive from the period, since most were lost to late-19th-century suburban growth. Its location within the early garden-suburb development of Fineview is also cited.","narrative":"Built probably about 1860 on a hilltop lot in Fineview on Pittsburgh's North Side, the two and a half story Henderson-Metz House is a stone dwelling in the Gothic Revival style. Its walls are of irregularly coursed cut sandstone with light mortar joints, and its steeply pitched gables carry a slate roof. Machine-cut soffit brackets and bargeboards decorate the projecting gables on the south and east facades, and the chimneys have polygonal clay pots. The house is asymmetrical in plan and has a one-story veranda leading to its original entrance. Its position overlooks the Allegheny River and offers wide views of downtown Pittsburgh. It is regarded as one of the most outstanding Gothic Revival houses in the Pittsburgh area. Most houses of this type were lost during late-nineteenth-century growth, so the surviving examples from this period are considered important to keep. Some window sash have been replaced and the interior has been converted to apartments.","period_of_significance":"c. 1860","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The interior has been divided into apartments and some minor additions have been made; the house is described as somewhat deteriorated.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:31.078402-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/79003141.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003141/bac7715460-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003141/bac7715460-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Lee Paxton","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henderson-MetzHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Lee Paxton</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henderson-MetzHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71997644","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henderson%E2%80%93Metz_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15223572"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/allegheny-county/henderson-metz-house-79003141/"}
