Grant Street, east of Marengo in Coral Township, McHenry County, Illinois. It was built by Orson Rogers, one of the county's earliest settlers.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an excellent example of Greek Revival architecture in Illinois, a style not usually found this far north. Its elegant, simple facade and unaltered condition make it notable, especially next to the nearly identical Anson Rogers house. Orson Rogers was also a prominent banker and businessman, and his farm once had a large butter and cheese factory.","narrative":"This two-story wooden house stands east of Marengo in Coral Township, McHenry County, Illinois. Built around 1846-1848 by Orson Rogers, one of the county's earliest settlers, it is a Greek Revival residence painted white with black shutters. A full-width porch with six 14-foot Doric columns shelters the front, where four windows flank a doorway with pilasters and columns. The house rests on stone and hand-hewn oak timber foundations, and a plain single-story extension sits at the rear. It was listed because it is an excellent example of Greek Revival design in a part of Illinois where the style is uncommon. It was originally almost identical to the adjacent Anson Rogers house, built by Orson's brother, but this one survives virtually unaltered. Orson Rogers was a prominent banker and businessman, and his farm once had a large butter and cheese factory that supplied the Palmer House and other major Chicago hotels. The nominated parcel covers 1.38 acres.","period_of_significance":"Built c. 1846-1848","architect_builder":"Orson Rogers","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied private residence; described as virtually unaltered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.435631-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/36/8936/28893636/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/79003114.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003114/d85a4495a8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003114/d85a4495a8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.5","author":"Andy McMurray","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Orson_Rogers_House6.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Andy McMurray</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.5\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.5</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Orson_Rogers_House6.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28893636","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orson_Rogers_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7104167"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/mchenry-county/rogers-orson-house-79003114/"}
