Its primary significance comes from its association with Clifton H. Moore, the county's first resident lawyer, a land agent and speculator who helped shape Clinton and DeWitt County until his death in 1901.","narrative":"Built between 1863 and 1867, this two-story frame house in Clinton, Illinois, combines a vaguely Italianate look with a low mansard roof, dormers and a modest central pavilion that point toward the Second Empire style. A west wing added in 1887 holds a kitchen, a tackroom and a two-story library with a vaulted ceiling and iron-railed gallery. Inside, the original parquet floors, marble mantelpieces, walnut staircase and many Moore furnishings remain. A carriage house from the 1860s and a servants' privy stand on the grounds. The house matters mainly for its link to Clifton H. Moore, who arrived in DeWitt County in 1841 and was its only resident lawyer for eight years. He worked alongside Abraham Lincoln for the Illinois Central Railroad, partnered with David Davis in land speculation, and helped bring the railroad to Clinton in 1854. Moore inherited the house in 1881. It now operates as a house museum.","period_of_significance":"1881 to 1901","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vaguely Italianate with Second Empire elements (transition from Italianate to Second Empire)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent, unaltered and on its original site; leased to the DeWitt County Museum Association and operated as a house museum called \"The Homestead.\"","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.172753-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/0/8927/28892700/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/79003112.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003112/e1dae9d7c8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003112/e1dae9d7c8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:C._H._MOORE_HOUSE.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28892700","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C._H._Moore_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5006499"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/dewitt-county/moore-c-h-house-79003112/"}
