Its conservative construction, including shoulder posts and an 18th-century-style principal-rafter and purlin roof with a mid-19th-century ridge board, is architecturally notable. Its turn-of-the-century milling machinery survives intact, and it figured in a Civil War episode in 1865.","narrative":"Edinburg Mill is a three-story frame grist mill beside Stony Creek on U.S. Route 11 in Edinburg, Virginia. Built around 1850 by George Grandstaff on a site his father Philip had developed into a mill complex after 1813, it sits on a limestone basement and has weatherboard siding and a standing-seam metal roof. Its construction is conservative, with braced framing, shoulder posts and an open principal-rafter and purlin roof that left space for bins and machinery. Turn-of-the-century additions include storage extensions and a small office. The interior machinery from that era remains intact, including a roller mill, a flour dresser and belt drive shafts, and the mill ran as a feed mill until July 1978. Tradition holds that during Sheridan's sweep through the Valley in February 1865, townswomen and Union officers put out a fire set in the building. Acquisition for adaptive reuse saved it from possible demolition.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Built by the Grandstaff family (George Grandstaff)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Worked as a feed mill until July 1978; excellent condition and unaltered per the form, and being adapted for use as a restaurant.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.892966-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/9/6836/41683609/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/79003084.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003084/05100198a3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003084/05100198a3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"DwayneP","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:EdinburgMill.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">DwayneP</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:EdinburgMill.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"98000845","name":"Edinburg Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/edinburg-historic-district-98000845/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683609","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edinburg_Mill","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5338124"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/shenandoah-county/edinburg-mill-79003084/"}
