It is also among the southernmost of these European-derived houses.","narrative":"North of Dayton in Rockingham County, Virginia, this log farmhouse was built by Peter Paul probably around 1810 on land bought from the Harrison family. It follows the Rhenish Flurkuchenhaus plan, with a central chimney, a kitchen (Küche) on one side, and a parlor (Stube) and narrow chamber (Kammer) on the other. The log walls were stuccoed early, and later plasterboard hides original beaded boarding, doors, hearths, floors and an attic ladder stair. In 1829 Paul added a two-room brick ell with Federal-style mantels, a common kind of addition in the Valley. The house was set on flat ground rather than into a bank, unlike most Germanic houses. Such houses were rarely built in Virginia after 1800, and this one may be the latest still standing in the state. It is also among the southernmost of its type, a surviving reminder of Swiss and German settlement in the Shenandoah Valley. The house is unoccupied and needs renovation.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Germanic; Rhenish Flurkuchenhaus plan, with Federal-style mantels in the ell","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as an unoccupied house on a working farm, in need of renovation; condition marked good.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:58.066638-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/89/6834/41683489/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/79003082.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003082/8565a3f18b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003082/8565a3f18b-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Peter_Paul_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Peter_Paul_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683489","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Paul_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15266046"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/rockingham-county/paul-peter-house-79003082/"}
