It is a little-altered, unusually large example of a hall-parlor house type found across the upper South. It also keeps a notable collection of original interior woodwork.","narrative":"Falkland is a large framed plantation house in the wooded piedmont of southern Prince Edward County, Virginia. Built about 1815, it has a two-story, four-bay central block flanked by one-story wings of unequal length. A two-story ell was added to the rear in the 1850s by Joseph Dupuy, along with a Greek Revival porch that has since been replaced by a stoop. The house stands on a Flemish-bond brick foundation and is clad in beaded weatherboards. Inside, much original woodwork survives, including flush wainscoting, molded mantels, closed-string and open-string stairs, and a wainscot door that keeps its original red paint. Francis Watkins, Jr., whose family was prominent in county affairs and in Hampden-Sydney College, built the house on land his father bought in 1780 and 1781. It is considered one of the county's earliest surviving houses and an unusually large, little-altered example of a hall-parlor type common across the upper South. Historian Richard B. Morton later lived there.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1810-1820","architect_builder":"Francis Watkins, Jr. (builder of the original house); Joseph Dupuy (added the ell)","architectural_style":"Hall-parlor plantation house with Greek Revival porch; vernacular Piedmont type","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent and unaltered; the house was renovated after 1969 by its owners.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:58.146609-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/66/6826/41682666/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/79003071.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003071/9a1575d52c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003071/9a1575d52c-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Falkland_house_near_Meherrin.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Falkland_house_near_Meherrin.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682666","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falkland_(Redd_Shop,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15217293"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/prince-edward-county/falkland-79003071/"}
