Its brickwork, Greek Revival detailing added in 1850, and surviving outbuildings illustrate the region's architectural sophistication in the second quarter of the 19th century. The lost box maze garden was also an unusual feature for 19th-century Virginia.","narrative":"Springfield is a brick Federal-style house on the edge of Heathsville in Northumberland County, Virginia. Merchant William Harding Jr. built it between 1828 and 1830 and enlarged it in 1850, when he was at the height of his business career. The two-and-a-half-story, central-hall dwelling has a five-bay Flemish bond facade with a two-level pedimented portico, cast-iron railings, and later stepped-gable wings. Inside, the stair hall, paneled wainscots, and ornamental stucco ceiling medallions show the Greek Revival work added in 1850. Several original outbuildings survive, including an office, dairy, slave quarters, and carriage house. The grounds once held a formal landscape with a box maze, which was unusual for 19th-century Virginia, but the garden site is now a field. The property was recognized as one of the finest Post-Revolutionary houses of the Northern Neck, with detailing that rivals Richmond townhouses of its period.","period_of_significance":"1828-30; 1850","architect_builder":"Unknown (built for William Harding, Jr.)","architectural_style":"Federal, with Greek Revival detailing","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied and used as a private residence; the carriage house south wall is in disrepair and the rear garden site has been plowed into a field.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:58.12223-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/0/6823/41682300/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/79003059.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003059/25442e7575-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003059/25442e7575-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SPRINGFIELD.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"92000053","name":"Heathsville Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/heathsville-historic-district-92000053/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682300","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Springfield_(Heathsville,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713244"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/northumberland-county/springfield-79003059/"}
