Despite later additions, enough original fabric survives to show the builder's intentions, including the Tuscan portico columns, the hipped roof and the original king post roof system. It is also tied to the origins of Woodberry Forest School.","narrative":"Set on the campus of Woodberry Forest School in Madison County, Virginia, this one-and-a-half-story frame house was built in 1793 for William Madison, brother of President James Madison. It is reputedly based on suggestions from Thomas Jefferson, who had taught law to Madison and wrote about a house plan that year. Jeffersonian features include a Tuscan portico, an entrance flanked by large windows and a hipped roof that lends a sense of monumentality to a small house. In 1884 Captain Robert Walker and his wife enlarged it with wings, bay windows, a new pediment and a rear pavilion, and the basement was dug out to hold a dining room and kitchen. Original Tuscan columns, a Federal mantel, a king post roof system and a smokehouse survive. The Walker family's tutor for their sons led to the founding of Woodberry Forest School. The house was long the headmaster's home and now serves as the school's guest house.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Thomas Jefferson (reputed designer); William Madison (builder/owner)","architectural_style":"Federal / Palladian-style frame dwelling","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is marked excellent; it serves as the school's guest house and was long the headmaster's home.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.693147-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/53/6818/41681853/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/79003052.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003052/a6c48580b6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003052/a6c48580b6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Gauemj2017","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Residence_WoodberryForest.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Gauemj2017</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Residence_WoodberryForest.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681853","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Residence_(Woodberry_Forest_School)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713326"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/madison-county/residence-the-79003052/"}
