The house dates unusually early for the area and was enlarged twice, absorbing several decorative styles and a succession of traditional plan types. Distinctive hexagonal chimney stacks, a plank-built smokehouse and a signed marble monument add further interest.","narrative":"Flat Rock is a large frame farmhouse on a hill overlooking rolling country south of Kenbridge in Lunenburg County, Virginia. It grew in three stages. The first part, a two-story hall-parlor or side-passage house, dates to the late 18th century. An east room was added just before 1820, and around 1856 a second-story east room and one-story wings were built and the chimney stacks remodeled. The result is a two-story, three-bay house with granite-and-brick end chimneys topped by hexagonal stacks. Inside, the woodwork is plain but well made and records each remodeling, from late 18th-century trim to Greek Revival mantels. Nearby are a smokehouse with walls of thick planks instead of studs, a granite-lined icehouse pit, and a marble obelisk of 1859 to Senator Henry H. Chambers, made by Bowie and Wright of Petersburg. The Chambers family were early owners. The property is valued for showing how a vernacular plantation house evolved in Southside Virginia.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular I-house form with Greek Revival mantels and trim","criteria":[],"status_note":"Renovation was in process at the time of the nomination; the form marks the property as work in progress, private residence, and both occupied and unoccupied.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.8252-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/13/6817/41681713/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/79003051.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003051/a3e52489ce-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003051/a3e52489ce-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lunenburg_Flat_Rock.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lunenburg_Flat_Rock.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681713","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_Rock_(Kenbridge,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712321"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/lunenburg-county/flat-rock-79003051/"}
