Ironmaster Henry Miller built the stone portion in the late 18th century, and a brick ell was added in the mid-19th century.","why_significant":"The house is a rare, carefully crafted example of a large late 18th-century Shenandoah Valley residence. It shows how German building practices were adapted to the predominantly English culture of Virginia. It is also tied to Henry Miller, an important figure in early industrial western Virginia who founded the Mossy Creek iron furnace.","narrative":"Set on a knoll in the rolling farmland of northern Augusta County, this large house combines a late 18th-century stone core with a mid-19th-century brick ell. Ironmaster Henry Miller, who died in 1796, built the stone section, probably in the mid-1780s. It is two stories of coursed rubble with an ashlar facade, a seven-bay front, stone end chimneys, and a long porch with Tuscan columns. Its side-passage, three-room plan reflects English Georgian ideas adapted from the German Continental house. Other German-influenced features include several exterior entrances on different levels, an attic stair to storage above the collar beams, and a subterranean dairy in the brick ell. Miller founded the Mossy Creek iron furnace, which made stoves, kettles, tools and Revolutionary War cannon. Later owners continued the ironworks into the Civil War era. A stone kitchen, a springhouse and a bank barn complex remain on the property.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Henry Miller","architectural_style":"Side-passage plan blending English Georgian and German (Continental) traditions","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition, occupied as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.516563-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/81/6796/41679681/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/79003029.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003029/58be4e457c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003029/58be4e457c-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henry_Miller_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henry_Miller_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679681","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Miller_House_(Mossy_Creek,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712521"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/augusta-county/miller-henry-house-79003029/"}
