It is the northwest of four public squares in the 1840 city plan, and the bandstand was designed by Page and Page, Architects.","why_significant":"It is the only one of Austin's four original public squares to have kept its original function as a park for more than 130 years. Its bandstand is the only survivor of three built in the oldest part of the city and is a fine small Classical Revival structure. The park has long been a setting for the city's outdoor social, musical and political life, including speeches by many Texas governors.","narrative":"Wooldridge Park is a one-block public park in the 900 block of Guadalupe Street in Austin, set in a natural basin whose sloped sides form an amphitheatre. At its center is a white-painted Classical Revival bandstand built in 1909 and designed by the Page architectural firm. It resembles a Greek pergola, with four fluted wooden Doric columns and an open wood-joist roof. The park was one of four public squares set aside in Austin's 1840 plan by Judge Edwin Waller, and it is the only one to keep its original use. The others became parking lots, a fire station, a church, a museum and businesses. Mayor Wooldridge had the park reclaimed and landscaped in 1909 after years of neglect, and a sidewalk followed in 1917. Many Texas governors and President Lyndon Johnson spoke from the bandstand, and it still hosts concerts, readings and small weddings. Its continuous park use and civic associations give it local importance.","period_of_significance":"1840, 1909","architect_builder":"Bandstand: Page and Page, Architects","architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as good and altered; the bandstand is largely original but has added latticework and a thin plywood roof deck. It remains in public use as a park.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:18.513363-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/3/9738/40973803/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/79003018.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003018/14ba0849ff-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79003018/14ba0849ff-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 4.0","author":"Larry D.
