It is also tied to James L. Autry, an important figure in the early Texas oil industry and a general counsel and director of the Texas Company (Texaco).","narrative":"Built in 1912 on Courtlandt Place in Houston, the James L. Autry House is a two-and-a-half story, wood frame Neo-Classical Revival residence. A double balustraded gallery with four two-story fluted Doric columns dominates the symmetrical front, and a semi-circular Doric entrance porch projects from the center. Inside, the entry hall features oak wainscoting, arched oak ceiling beams, brass sconces and an oak staircase lit by a leaded and beveled glass window. The grounds hold a garage with chauffeur quarters and an apartment, plus a greenhouse and tennis courts. Sanguinet & Staats designed the house, with Alfred Finn as associate. Courtlandt Place was established in 1906 as an exclusive neighborhood and is protected by restrictive covenants. James L. Autry, a lawyer who followed oil entrepreneur J. S. Cullinan from Corsicana to Beaumont and then Houston, became general counsel and a director of the Texas Company. His house reflects that professional and financial success. His family sold it in 1938.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"Sanguinet & Staats with Alfred Finn as associate","architectural_style":"Neo-Classical Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as a private residence in good standing, with a garage, greenhouse and tennis courts on the grounds; the form lists it as occupied private property.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:19.370688-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/36/9724/40972436/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/79002953.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79002953/dff083d947-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79002953/dff083d947-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"i_am_jim","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:James_L._Autry_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">i_am_jim</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:James_L._Autry_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"94000859","name":"Westmoreland Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/texas/westmoreland-historic-district-94000859/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40972436","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_L._Autry_House_(Courtlandt_Place,_Houston)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q48976828"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/harris-county/autry-james-l-house-79002953/"}
