Both belong to the Cross-Tipped Churches thematic group.","why_significant":"The church is a large Gothic building with peaked arches, sandstone-trimmed buttresses and notable white reredos inside, little altered. The parish was founded in 1858 after settlers found travel to St. Joe too difficult, and the church is named for Peter Kerber, who carried the altarstone and chalice on foot. The rectory is the first built for the parish.","narrative":"St. Peter Catholic Church and its rectory stand at the northwest corner of St. Peter and Philothea Roads in Mercer County, Ohio. The brick Gothic church was built between 1904 and 1906 and has a three-bay front, a projecting tower with a single doorway, a slate gable roof, and peaked arches with sandstone-trimmed buttresses. Its spire has been removed and the brick sandblasted, but the interior retains outstanding white reredos and few changes to its decoration. The parish formed in 1858, when poor winter roads made the trip to St. Joe difficult. Peter Kerber carried the altarstone and chalice more than twenty miles from Union City on foot, and the church was named for him. The two-story brick rectory, built in 1912, was the parish's first. It has a hipped roof, bracketed cornice and a wraparound wooden veranda. Both buildings remain in use.","period_of_significance":"1904-1912","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Gothic (church); Vernacular (rectory)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Both church and rectory are in their original uses, with exterior condition rated good; the church interior is also rated good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.684627-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79002831.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79002831/2e54787b84-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79002831/2e54787b84-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._Peter%27s_Church_at_St._Peter,_angle_from_southeast_in_the_morning.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._Peter%27s_Church_at_St._Peter,_angle_from_southeast_in_the_morning.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71985871","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138588740"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/mercer-county/st-peter-catholic-church-and-rectory-79002831/"}
