It is a one-and-a-half-story post-and-beam building with clapboard siding and a stone foundation.","why_significant":"The nomination ties the house to Sylvester Shaw, a hard-working and well-respected farmer who moved his family to Bath in 1832. He built up his landholdings to 152 acres by 1874, and his son later held part of the farm. The house is also a good local example of Greek Revival design, with a Tuscan-pilaster entrance.","narrative":"This long Greek Revival house on Hametown Road in Bath Township dates to about 1830. It is a one-and-a-half-story, post-and-beam building with clapboard walls, a stone foundation and a shallow gable roof under a wide entablature. The central entrance has a projecting architrave and a wide frieze carried on Tuscan pilasters. Over time the original six-over-six windows were replaced and a recent addition was built on one end, but the house remains a residence. Sylvester Shaw moved his family to Bath in 1832 and lived at first in a log cabin already standing on the property. Described as hard-working and well respected, he stayed out of township politics. By 1856 he owned 124 acres, and by 1874 he had increased his holdings to 152 acres. He died the following year. By 1891 his son, Sylvester P. Shaw, held 124 acres of the family land plus 56 acres nearby. Large trees screen the house from the quiet road, and the surrounding area is still mostly farmed.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still in use as a residence; condition listed as good on the exterior.
