Samuel Knicely built it in 1835 and gave it to Ensign Kellogg on his marriage to Sarah Knicely in 1842. It stayed in the Kellogg family until 1977. It is also an early surviving building within the Columbia-Tusculum multiple resource area.","narrative":"Built in 1835 by Samuel Knicely, this 2 1/2-story frame house on Eastern Avenue in Cincinnati's Columbia-Tusculum area is a Federal Vernacular building. It is a linear structure with plain window openings, a fairly steep gable roof with two end interior chimneys, and a plain cornice with small brackets. Clapboard covers the walls, which sit on a fieldstone foundation, and the basement floor is brick. Small enclosed porches were added to the facade, two wings extend from the rear, and a north porch was added in 1900. Inside, pillars and original fretwork distinguish the entrance hall. Knicely gave the house to Ensign Kellogg when he married Sarah Knicely in 1842, and it remained in the Kellogg family until the death of Mary Kellogg in June 1977. The original use may have been as a tavern and inn. The house now holds apartments and sits close to a busy street among larger buildings.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Samuel Knicely (builder)","architectural_style":"Federal Vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used as apartments; interior and exterior condition listed as fair.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:12.954902-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/79002702.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79002702/77a33c2ebc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79002702/77a33c2ebc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Photo by Greg Hume (Greg5030)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:KelloggHouseCincinnati.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Photo by Greg Hume (Greg5030)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:KelloggHouseCincinnati.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71985434","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kellogg_House_(Cincinnati,_Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14716564"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/hamilton-county/kellogg-house-79002702/"}
