It has a later wing and a rear kitchen ell.","why_significant":"The nomination cites the quality of the house's architectural detail and its associations with several prominent Norfolk families. These include the Turners and the Sayles family, who were wealthy mill owners. The house remained largely undisturbed until 1940 and is described as an important example of Norfolk's early history.","narrative":"Built in 1712, this farmhouse at 187 Seekonk Street in Norfolk, Massachusetts, was constructed by John Turner, a founding settler of neighboring Medfield, for his son Stephen on his marriage to Judith Fisher. The two and one half story, five bay house follows the center entry, center chimney plan typical of the early to mid eighteenth century. It has unpainted clapboards, mostly 9/6 sash windows, and an entrance framed by fluted pilasters and a triangular pediment. Inside are raised field paneling, wide floor boards and cased structural members. A three bay wing, added around 1800, may actually be the oldest part. In 1792 the house passed to Elisha Sayles, whose sons Willard and Ariel operated mills including the Stony Brook Cotton Mill, and some of the more elaborate details may date from that period. The property once covered about 100 acres of farmland. It stayed largely undisturbed until the farm was subdivided in 1940. It was listed for its architectural quality and its links to prominent local families.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799 (specific date 1712)","architect_builder":"John Turner (builder, for his son Stephen)","architectural_style":"Georgian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; the form says the house had heat, plumbing and electricity added in 1940, and it has an asphalt shingle roof.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.454371-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/8/7963/63796308/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/79002682.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79002682/9c9ad58538-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/79002682/9c9ad58538-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NorfolkMA_StephenTurnerHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NorfolkMA_StephenTurnerHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63796308","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Turner_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7610720"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/turner-stephen-house-79002682/"}
